The suburban neighborhood of McKenzie Lake is located in southeast Calgary, along the Bow River next to the communities of Mountain Park and Douglasdale. At an elevation of 1,035 meters, McKenzie Lake is home to a population of more than 14,000 people.

The original community of McKenzie was built in 1984. McKenzie Lake then developed in the 1990s as an expansion of the former McKenzie community. In 1997 specifically, the development of Legacy Ridge unified the two separated regions of McKenzie and McKenzie Lake. The area today is known for its private lake and island in the community centre, surrounded by a number of large homes.
