Okotoks, AB
The town of Okotoks sits along the Sheep River in Alberta, about 18 kilometers south of Calgary. It covers close to 20 square kilometers of land at an elevation of 1,051 meters, housing a population of nearly 29,000 people.
The name “Okotoks” comes from a native word for rock, likely referring to what’s known today as “Big Rock” a few kilometers west of town. The community grew around a sawmill established in the late 19th century, after which Okotoks was incorporated as a village in 1899 and then as a town in 1904. The present-day town is the largest in Alberta, host to Canada’s longest-running collector car auction, while maintaining its own airport and numerous restored old buildings.
